A Journey to Aberdeen Waterfall
It is time to explore another marvellous destination in Sri Lanka, where every adventure rewards you with unforgettable memories. I must say that this journey is truly worth the effort if you are passionate about nature and adventure. Come along with us as we share our experience of exploring the magnificent Aberdeen Waterfall.
Aberdeen Waterfall is formed by the Kehelgamu Oya and is located near Ginigathhena in the Nuwara Eliya District. Standing at approximately 98 metres in height, it is considered the 18th-tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Before you plan your visit, it is important to know that reaching the waterfall requires patience and a little determination. However, if you are an adventure lover, every step of the journey will be worth it. We also recommend setting aside an entire day to explore this beautiful destination and truly immerse yourself in the beauty of Mother Nature.
The drive from our hotel to the waterfall took around 45 minutes. After an enjoyable drive through the scenic surroundings, we reached the parking area, where our trekking adventure began. From there, it took us around 20–25 minutes to reach the main viewpoint. The directions to the waterfall are clear and easy to follow, making the journey quite straightforward.
The best time to visit the Aberdeen Waterfall is from September to December, when the increased rainfall creates a spectacular water flow. However, in the dry season, the Hill Country experiences unexpected rainfall that can suddenly increase the water level. Because of this, visitors are strongly advised not to swim in the lower pool of the waterfall. It is also worth noting that the water from Aberdeen Waterfall contributes to Sri Lanka’s hydroelectric power generation, which means the water flow may sometimes be lower than its natural level.
After enjoying the main viewpoint, we discovered that there are two beautiful upper sections waiting to be explored. To reach the first upper viewpoint, you need to drive for about five minutes from the main entrance. There is a signboard indicating the route to the upper area. After parking your vehicle, it is only a 5–10 minute walk to reach this hidden gem.
The view from the upper section was absolutely breathtaking. Surrounded by lush greenery, calm waters, and peaceful scenery, it felt like a hidden paradise. By this time, it was almost noon, and after the morning hike, I couldn’t resist taking a refreshing bath in the natural pond, which is considered safe for bathing. Luckily, we had the entire place to ourselves, allowing us to truly enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature.
Since it was the Adam’s Peak season, colourful butterflies filled the surrounding forest, while small birds sang beautifully among the trees. It was one of those rare moments where you simply stop talking and appreciate everything around you.
Our adventure didn’t end there. If you still have enough energy, you can continue climbing to another upper section of the waterfall. Although this area is not suitable for swimming, you can safely touch the crystal-clear water and refresh yourself after the hike. The peaceful atmosphere alone makes the extra climb worthwhile.
Before starting our journey, we had packed some delicious local snacks, so this seemed like the perfect place to enjoy them while admiring the incredible scenery. Sitting beside the flowing water, surrounded by untouched nature, was one of the most memorable moments of our trip.
